Sony has announced a new photo sensor used on smartphones and other mobile devices. The sensor uses a new matrix RGBX adding a white pixel to the RGB classical layout improving the sensitivity to light and therefore the yield in low-light photography. The new sensor also allows Sony to make video with HDR (High Dynamic Range) offering better contrast, even in backlight.

Sony has scheduled the release of three sensors that use this technology during the year. An 8 megapixel camera is scheduled for May but will not integrate video support HDR. The first real RGBW will have 13 megapixels of resolution, and will arrive in June. In August, finally, is due to arrive at an 8 megapixel camera with support for HDR video.
